BIOGRAPHY

Carter Tong has dedicated 40+ years to the respiratory care profession. An alumnus of Loma Linda University’s Associate's and Bachelor's respiratory care programs, his early career focused on pediatric and neonatal patient care.

Midway in his career, Carter worked in pharmaceutical sales, receiving a Top Ten Club award for overall sales. Simultaneously, he served as board member of the American Lung Association Inland Empire, later transitioning to Vice President for Patient Education. He also received the Outstanding Volunteer Leadership award.

When Carter returned to neonatal/pediatric patient care, he served as a research assistant to Mitchell Goldstein, MD, Professor of Neonatology at LLU. He later received department awards for Teamwork, Excellence in Service, and the prestigious Charles “Bud” Spearman Outstanding Respiratory Care award.

Carter was later invited to join the LLU respiratory care faculty. He has served part time for 10+ years, while working full time at the LLU Children’s Hospital in multiple roles. In 2013, at the Snowbird Conference for High Frequency Ventilation in Adults and Children Critical Care Conference, Carter was awarded the Jimmy Schultz Award for improving patient care through research and innovative use of respiratory care technology.

Carter mentors students of respiratory care from different programs, but he serves as an instructor only for Loma Linda University to show gratitude for the years of education that he has received. Carter is active in his church and served as Director of the Celebrate Recovery Program from 2005 to 2009.

For his decades of neonatal and pediatric respiratory care, and for his loyalty to the LLU Respiratory Care Bachelor’s program, the Cardiopulmonary Sciences department is honored to present the 2021 Distinguished Alumnus award to Carter Tong.
